More than a foot of snow in Big Moose and Old Forge...and it's only October!

OLD FORGE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Many residents in the North Country woke up to more than a foot of snow Wednesday morning. Sure, it's typical for winter up North...but let's not forget - it's still October.

The usually tourist-filled streets this Fall season remained silent for most of the day...as the scraping of snowplow blades against the street replaced the sound of bustling feet.

"It was only a few weeks ago that people were up looking at the fall colors," said Erica Murray, one of the new owners of Old Forge Hardware. "This is normal up here, though. You never know what to expect."

"It was a bit of a shock," said Nick Bankert, a local business owner. "We knew it was going to snow last night but we only expected two or three inches. It was close to a foot in some areas. And it was difficult getting out of some of the driveways around here."

While areas such as here in big moose are home to many leaf peepers this time of year, as was clearly seen - that season is pretty much over, as the fall foliage colors have been replaced hazy shades of white and gray.

"I think this will be it for the leaf peepers," Bankert said. "I think the season has peaked and now we just wait for our next season. And it's still a bit early, but hopefully we can have the type of winter like we did back in the 70s."

"It's so beautiful - the snow sparkles on the trees...the air is clear and it's just fun," said lifetime Old Forge resident Judy Barker. "I look forward to it every year. And the earlier the better."

"We're a tough breed," Bankert said. "And you have to be up here."

And while many north country residents pride themselves on being a hearty bunch, unfazed by this type of weather, they still have a ways to go before they have to worry about this for the long term - as meteorologists predict that this kind of weather will pass as temperatures rise over the course of the weekend.
