Saying 'i love you' with wiper blades

HERKIMER - It wasn't just chocolates or diamond earrings flying off shelves Wednesday.

"I've already had several people come in to buy wiper blades for their significant others," said Jewel Stafford, an employee at AutoZone in Herkimer. "It's the hot Valentine's Day gift this year."

Love may not have been the only thing on the minds of Herkimer County residents Wednesday, considering the National Weather Service had issued a blizzard warning for the region. In between the whiteout conditions, swirling winds and monster snow banks, though, there were glimpses of love.

In Herkimer, Chris and Dianne Sylvester held hands as they walked home from Denny's. The couple had gone for a meal before getting to work on the snow.

"I need a hearty breakfast before I start shoveling," Chris Sylvester said.

In Ilion, Mary Hodge, 74, made her way down West Main Street to Stewart's convenience store for groceries. She had planned to go to Hannaford, but the bus did not arrive Wednesday morning, and she decided to take off on foot.

She wore a fuzzy purple hat, given to her by a woman she was taking care of, that symbolized a different kind of affection.

"When she died, she wanted me to have the hat," Hodge said. "I told her I would wear it in her memory."

A handful of customers made their way to Vintage Spirits liquor store in Herkimer, although many had taken precautions and visited the previous day, owner Bronson Hager. He said business always increases around Valentine's Day.

After shoveling the sidewalk and driveway in front of his store, Hager was ready for business just as a customer pulled up.

"Bring 'em on," he said.
